O'CONNOR HOUSE
O'Connor House provides a detoxification and rehabiliation program for people who are alcohol dependent and who may also be dependent on other specific drugs of abuse. These drugs include cannabis and stimulants but not IV drug use.
The Program
The 21 day program focuses on raising your awareness of the major issues associated with alcohol and cannabis abuse. Such issues include:
- Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual effects of substance misuse.
- Feelings of anger, grief, guilt, shame, fear.
- Self empowerment through assertive and esteem building skills.
- Introduction to principles of Alcoholics Anonymous.
- Stress Management skills
- Relapse prevention.
THE PEPPERS
The Peppers uses the Therapeutic Community model of drug treatment to assist residents to learn the skills necessary to live drug free.
ENTRY PROCESS FOR PROSPECTIVE RESIDENTS
- Telephone assessment available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Prospective applicants can self-refer.
- Staff will undertake a thorough assessment to establish suitability for entry into this program.
- Prospective residents will be required to ring on a regular basis to confirm their commitment to entry to the program and to advise staff regarding preparations for entry.
- Prospective residents will have to demonstrate that they will have undergone detoxification and have proof that they are drug-free on admission.
- The primary condition of the agreement is to remain free from all mood altering drugs including alcohol effective from the date of commitment. Failure to keep this comitment will result in the resident being asked to leave the community.

OUR PROCEDURE FOR ADMISSION TO THE PEPPERS:
- Must be 18 years or over - (16-18 years individually assessed for need) - male or female.
- Facilities for couples with children are not available.
- Must not be facing legal proceedings.
- We are unable to cater currently for people who have major psychiatric problems - at a later date stable dual diagnosis case managed residents may be accepted.
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate a commitment to cease using drugs.
THERE IS AN EXPECTATION THAT RESIDENTS WILL..
- Abide by program rules
- Report any special medical reuqirements to staff eg allergies etc.
- Participate in general health checks which are part of the intake process.
- Contribute to living costs through a percentage of welfare benefits or an equivalent amount.
- Respect the rights of the therapeutic community and staff.

- A safe supportive environment to work through issues linked to substance abuse.
- Individual counselling and case management.
HOME LIAISION AND DETOXIFICATION SERVICE
The Home Detoxification & Liaison Service provides a safe supportive option for people who wish to withdraw from a drug and/or alcohol in their home, or in an outpatient setting, with medical support from their General Practitioner.
The service will also support clients while they are waiting to attend a residential program if on assessment it is recognised the withdrawal symptoms are likely to be severe and outpatient withdrawal is not recommended. This can be the case in con-current medical or psychiatric conditions or if there is no support person or a supportive environment available to the client.
