Alcohol & Other Drugs Services - Your Stay

O'CONNOR HOUSE
Admissions
- Monday to Thursday 10 am - 2 pm (unless otherwise arranged).
- Assessment prior to admission.
- A small daily charge is made.
- Pharmaceutical will be charged to you.
- Referral by your drug and Alcohol Counsellor general practitioner or you may self refer.
The Environment
O'Connor House is staffed by experienced Drug and Alcohol personnel who provide a safe, non-judgmental atmostphere.
After Care
After completion of the proram you will be referred back to a Drug and Alcohol Counsellor in your area or you may return as a day patient for a period of time.
THE PEPPERS
STAGES OF PROGRESS THROUGH THE PROGRAM
This program is personally challenging however there will be opportunities for recreation, sporting and social activities.
STAGE ONE CONSISTS OF A SIX WEEK INDUCTION FOCUS ON EDUCATION AND GROUP WORK.
This involves:
- No outside contact for six weeks.
- Experiencing the benefits of a drug-free lifestyle.
- Gaining an understanding of basic human behaviours and developing life skills.
- Making an informed choice about future treatment needs and options.
- Education on issues such as relapse rpevention, relaxation, harm minimisation, infectious diseases, basic nutrition etc.
- Basic sessions on anger, shame, grief and loss, fear and guilt, self esteem.
STAGE TWO - RESIDENTS CONTINUE RECOVERY IN A PHYSICAL SENSE. THE EMPHASIS DURING THIS STAGE IS ON EMOTIONAL AND SPIRITUAL GROWTH WITH THE SUPPORT OF OTHER RESIDENTS AND STAFF:
- A time of increased feelings of self-worth, gaining self-confidence in decision-making and learning through mistakes.
- A time of rstructuring lifestyles, developing healthy attitudes and activities and setting realistic goals.
- Atime of assuming greater responsibility for personal recovery, involvement in the running of the Community and supporting "newcomers" to the program.
- This is also a transition phase when residents begin the process of exiting the program and moving into after-care and the outside Community.
RULES: Residents breaking the following rules will be liable to immediate discharge.
- No drugs or alcohol to be brought in or used at The Peppers.
- No resident to use any alcohol or drug whilst a member of this Community.
- No sexual activity or involvement while a resident of The Peppers.
- No violence or threat thereof.
- No theft.
- Knowledge or any infringement of any of these rules must be communicatd to staff.
- Random urine samples to be given within two hours of request.
- No smoking inside The Peppers building.
